Mr. Richard Nixon Gomez of BauerTek Farmaceutical Technologies Corp. met with representatives from Isabela State University (ISU) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Wednesday, January 29, in Echague, Isabela. Present at the meeting were President Ricmar Aquino of ISU and Undersecretary Brenda Manzano of DOST to establish new facilities on the school campus, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the collaboration. Also present was Engr. Sancho Mabborang, Director of DOST Region II.

This marks a promising beginning for a stronger partnership and greater community support. This agreement will provide opportunities for university students to enhance their education through practical work within classrooms. It will also offer local farmers the chance to cultivate crops with higher profitability as alternatives to corn and rice.

Usec. Manzano expressed her sentiments on this rare occasion of cooperation between academia, government, and the private industry. Some aspects of the MOA include funds from DOST to enable ISU to conduct research on medicinal plants, such as moringa, turmeric, and others. These crops are easier to grow and will provide higher income for farmers. The university will also be involved in preparing these plants in powdered form for easy use.

However, the Undersecretary encouraged those present to consider the economic aspect that this project will bring to the community. BauerTek Farmaceutical Technologies Corp. will purchase the crops and turn them into organic herbal supplements that help combat diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Usec. Manzano, a cancer survivor, strongly believes in the effectiveness of herbal products and hopes that more Filipinos will benefit from them in the future. Mr. Gomez of BauerTek Farmaceutical Technologies Corp. developed the world’s most potent antioxidant by combining an extract of turmeric called curcumin with an extract from chili peppers called piperine. Ito ay isang magandang panimula para sa mas matatag na samahan at labis na makapagbibigay ng tulong sa komunidad. Ang kasunduang ito ay magbibigay daan sa mga mag-aaral mula sa unibersidad na mahasa ang kanilang edukasyon sa aktuwal na Gawain sa loob ng silid-aralan. Ito rin ay magbibigay sa lokal na mga magsasaka ng pagkakataon na magtanim ng may mas malaking kita bilang alternatibo sa mais at bigas.

Ipinahayag ni Usec. Manzano ang kanyang sentimiyento sa ganitong bihirang pagkakataon ng pakikipagtulungan sa pagitan ng akademya, gobyerno, at pribadong industriya. Ilan sa mga aspeto ng MOA ay kinabibilangan ng pondo mula sa DOST na magpapahintulot sa ISU na magsagawa ng pananaliksik sa mga halamang gamot, tulad ng malunggay, luyang dilaw, at iba pa. Ang mga pananim na ito ay mas madaling itanim at magbibigay ng mas malaking kita sa mga magsasaka. Ang unibersidad rin ay makikilahok sa paghahanda ng mga halamang ito sa powdered form para sa madaling paggamit.

Gayunpaman, hinimok ng Undersecretary ang mga naroroon na tignan ang pang-ekonomiyang aspeto na madadala ng proyektong ito sa komunidad.
